概述

The aim of this course is to enhance students' critical thinking and develop more formal discussion skills. In this class, students will read a variety of texts given in class or from e3. Students will also actively engage in extensive discussion with their peers. Discussion skills will be practiced in a variety of formats including whole-class analysis of topical issues assigned to each group, problem-solving group work, or short presentations.

1. You MUST be present on the first day of class, or you will be dropped from the course. 2. If you wish to be added to the class, you SHOULD be present on the first day of class. 3. You should feel comfortable of using Facebook as the discussion platform.

教學方式

A discussion page on Facebook has been created and is used for the course throughout the semester. Each student is required to participate in the online group in order to gain the marking of the online discussion. Students' participation is monitored each week. Therefore, please add yourself to the group or ask one of the members to add you. Important: 1. If you fail to show up in the first class (first period), you will be dropped. 2. If you wish to be added, please show up on time (first period). 3. Any change is announced via e-campus, so please check your email on a regular basis.

評分方式

1. Attendance: 10% 2. Participation: 10% 3. Online Facebook discussion: 20% 4. Midterm critical writing: 15% (Computer Lab) An article will be given a week ahead, but questions will only be available on that day. Students will work alone and answer the questions within 100 minutes. 5. Final critical debate/presentation: 15% (Scenarios are announced a week ahead) Each group is given a scenario and 10 minutes to prepare for their presentation. Students will be able to practice a week before with similar scenarios. 6. Group presentation: 20% Each group needs to choose a topic, deliver their presentation with the information they can find, lead the discussion, and present their conclusion. The rest of the class will have to participate in their discussion leading. 7. Individual discussion leading: 10% (Each person takes turns leading the discussion and graded by the peers)
