Language learning strategies (LLS) are actions, behaviors, steps, or techniques used by learners to enhance learning. Research generally indicates that appropriate use of language learning strategies results in improved L2 proficiency overall, or in specific language skill areas. This course is designed to help students further familiarity with learning, instruction and research of language learning strategies. In this course, issues, theories, and frameworks of language learning strategies will be reviewed. Methods for research on L2 learning strategies will be introduced. We will also read and discuss studies about strategy use in different language areas, including reading, writing, listening, and speaking, as well as vocabulary learning and grammar learning. Finally, we will look at L2 learning strategies in computer-assisted language learning and mobile-assisted language learning. In understanding the issues of language learning strategies, students will be better equipped to research and design instructional strategies and create supportive environments and materials that facilitate learners’ language acquisition.
