In this course, students will read and critically evaluate Hasok Chang’s new book Realism for Realistic People (2022). In this book, Chang presents a new pragmatist philosophy of science that defines the notions of truth and reality in terms of what he calls the ‘operational coherence’ of epistemic activities. In opposition to traditional scientific realism, Chang defends what he calls an ‘activist realism’ according to which we should maximize our knowledge of reality. This course provides students with an opportunity to learn about and engage with some cutting-edge work by one of the top scholars working in the history and philosophy of science. ● Students will learn about some cutting-edge work produced by an important scholar. ● Students will learn how to summarize and critically evaluate work in the history and philosophy of science.

Undergraduate students: ● Book review article (800-1500 words in English, 2000-3000 words in Chinese) (70%) ● Weekly discussion questions, to be posted to Google Classroom before each class meeting (20%) ● Discussion and participation (10%) Graduate students: ● Book review article (800-1500 words in English, 2000-3000 words in Chinese) (60%) ● Weekly discussion questions, to be posted to Google Classroom before each class meeting (10%) ● Lead one class meeting (10%) ● Answer all of your classmates’ discussion questions for the class meeting that you are responsible for leading (10%) ● Discussion and participation (10%) Attendance Policy YM campus students: Required to attend in-person every session, unless students have a compelling excuse to attend online (e.g., Covid quarantine). Students who want to attend online must get permission from the instructors in advance. Every student can apply to attend online two times at most. Students who fail to comply with this attendance policy will receive a grade penalty. CT campus students: Can attend online or in-person. Note: If there are no YM campus students enrolled in the course (no in-person students), this course will transform from a hybrid course to a fully online course. Please note that, according to the Ministry of Education’s regulations, credits gained from taking fully online courses cannot count for more than half of the total number of credits required for graduation.
