Introduction to Health Informatics

課程概述與目標: The objectives of this course are to introduce you (1) the basic but major concepts of what health informatics means, implies, should be and could be, (2) the progress of the use of ICT technology in healthcare, service, researches, delivery and management, and (3) the future of healthcare informatics issues could be based on the trends of development in Tech and cooresponding changes in healthcare delivery and human needs. We will pick chapters from the book, Biomedical Informatics: Computer Applications in Healthcare and Biomedicine (4th ed.), edited by Drs Shortliffe and Cimino when they were both faculty in the University of Columbia, as “Reference” textbook. 14 topics will be picked from that book and introduced at the class. The majority of those were updated by Dr Shortliffe in his 5th edition. The outcomes is to make you familiar with the main topics in health sciences informatics in the area of clinical, public health and personal care. Your performance will be graded by your involvement during the classes and final 10-paged review paper, which will be explained in details in the class.

Class participation: 60% Review Paper: 40% You are encouraged to submit the outcomes of your work for the MedInfo2025 by the end of 2025. Your review paper homework could be waived if you do so.
