By learning foundational linguistic concepts and reading selected chapters from the popular science books Rebooting AI and Taming Silicon Valley, this course pursues four goals: A. to help students in the Department of Foreign Languages break away from the rigid dichotomy between the humanities and the sciences. B. to strengthen students’ foundational understanding and motivation for studying linguistics-related courses and engaging in interdisciplinary learning. C. to cultivate students’ scientific literacy and independent judgment regarding artificial intelligence in the digital age. D. to guide students in understanding why, despite current advances in AI, large language models do not truly comprehend human language.
